Ever felt betrayed by a pretty cover or an alluring quote?

There are so many books out there that sometimes it's impossible to choose what to read next – and it's easy to feel let down by what's inside the covers when you do.

Not any more. Fresh from having sorted out writers everywhere with How NOT to Write a Novel ('A hilarious, wickedly observed and deeply useful guide' Observer), Sandra Newman and Howard Mittlemark have turned their attention to the 500 books that will enhance your shelves, and your life, forever.

Covering books from Catch 22 to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and exploring all the important issues like how to tell the difference between Naomis Wolf and Klein, whether anyone really likes Emma Bovary and what makes the perfect loo book, this smart, witty and insightful guide reminds you exactly why you love reading and then makes you want to go out and read lots more.

You'll never have to judge another book by its cover again.
