The world has fallen, the great cities and seas all starved of the very things that made them wondrous. Cynthia lives in the Apartments, a place where her and all the other girls living within are assessed by their caloric worth, from their blood, their tissue, to their very thoughts, everything in the Apartments is prepared for sale. Ms. Tuttle and Ms. Glennoc rule there but as Cynthia soon discovers, the world beyond the walls of the Apartments is far darker and far more hungry than she could ever imagine. When Cynthia is blamed for consuming an "A" ration, the other girls in the apartment decide to punish her setting off a chain of events that changes everything for all of them.
Ration is a dark and forceful book, written in a surprisingly nuanced and accessible way. It combines the darkness and despair of The Road and The Handmaid's Tale, but has notes of charm like Lauren Oliver's Replica.
