Quantity surveying is a critical discipline within the construction and infrastructure development industry. It involves managing all building and civil engineering project costs, ensuring value for money while achieving the required standards and quality. Quantity surveyors are pivotal in projects' financial and contractual management, from initial estimates to final accounts. This section explores the foundations of quantity surveying, its historical development, roles, skills required, and the modern tools used in the profession.
Historical Quantity surveying has its roots in ancient construction practices, where architects and builders estimated costs for structures like temples, castles, and monuments. The profession became formalised during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century when the need for accurate cost management in large-scale construction projects grew. Modern quantity surveying emerged as a response to increasingly complex projects requiring specialised expertise in cost estimation, contract law, and financial management.
Module 1 consists of an Introduction to Quantity Surveying, Construction Technology and Materials, surveying Techniques and Equipment, measurement of Building Works, Construction Economics, Mathematics and Statistics for Surveyors, and communication and Report Writing Skills.
Module 2 consists of Cost Estimating and Analysis, Procurement Methods and Contract Administration, Legal Aspects of Surveying and Construction, Sustainable Building Practices, Building Information Modelling (BIM) Applications, Financial Management in Construction, Internship and Industrial Exposure.
Module 3 consists of Advanced Measurement and Estimation, Dispute Resolution and Arbitration, and Advanced Software for Quantity Surveying (AutoCAD, Revit). It also includes a Final Research Project.
