Aulen Gregoire, a young and brilliant surgeon at the Hospital of Saint Sommes, learns that when he bleeds his patients survive, no matter their condition. The third novel, Blood, is about a brilliant surgeon cursed with blood that heals. His life falls apart as he descends into the desperate underworld of Julis, gradually becoming addicted to using his blood to work miracles among the whores and the diseased.
