Wealth ... or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are preprogrammed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. The Gateway of the title is an artificial spaceport full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious vanished Heechee. The marvellous premise of the book lies in the terrifying journeys of discovery that the protagonists make in these ships; some return with discoveries which make their pilots fabulously rich, while others return as piles of charred matter.
