Many a fantasy sequence has started auspiciously, only to run out of steam on the second or third book. While Gray's sequel to Ice Mage doesn't quite have the dash of its predecessor, it still demonstrates great brio in creating a fully realized landscape in which politics, the occult and human passions combine in a highly atmospheric saga. The legacy of its tyrannical rulers has given the new government in Tiguafaya an uphill task. And Gray's beleaguered protagonists are also obliged to deal with the mighty Empire to the north, whose emperor is bent on destroying the Tiguafayans' heretical belief in magic. Gray creates her fantasy kingdom on the hoof, and never allows pedestrian detail to slow down the forward rush of her narrative. If the characters are not rendered with any great psychological depth, this is still proving to be a sequence of vigorous charm. (Kirkus UK)
