Simply Beside Herself

What inspired Judith Katherine to choose a retirement home setting as the catalyst for her debut novel?

Judith Katherine's focus on a retirement home environment reflects her broader literary interest in exploring how institutional routines and physical distance can affect personal relationships and individual agency. Her background of raising a family whilst living around the world has given her a unique perspective on how people maintain or lose their sense of self when separated from familiar surroundings, making the retirement home an ideal setting to examine themes of autonomy and rediscovery in later life.

How does the novel's treatment of three generations of women distinguish it from typical family drama fiction?

Rather than focusing solely on conflict between generations, the novel examines how Elizabeth, Lara, and Evie each face parallel struggles with agency and self-determination at their respective life stages. The narrative structure allows Katherine to explore how patterns of losing oneself can repeat across generations, whilst also demonstrating that the capacity for bold decision-making and personal reclamation isn't limited by age. This multi-generational approach offers readers insight into how family members can simultaneously experience their own crises whilst remaining disconnected from one another.

What writing style can readers expect from an author who composes on the back of envelopes in cafes?

Judith Katherine's unconventional writing practice suggests an observational, spontaneous approach to storytelling that likely captures authentic moments and genuine human behaviour. This method of composition often results in prose that feels immediate and grounded in real-world settings, with dialogue and character interactions that reflect overheard conversations and observed mannerisms. Her cafe-based writing habit also indicates an author deeply engaged with everyday life and the small details that reveal larger truths about human nature.

How does the novel balance its serious themes of independence and identity with its description as charming and warm?

Katherine employs humour and compassion as narrative tools to explore potentially confronting subjects like ageing, institutional care, and family dysfunction without becoming heavy-handed or depressing. The novel's warmth emerges from its fundamentally hopeful premise that change and self-reclamation remain possible regardless of circumstance or age, whilst the charm lies in the audacity of Elizabeth's decision and the ripple effects it creates. This tonal balance allows readers to engage with meaningful themes whilst still enjoying an uplifting and emotionally satisfying reading experience.
