The Water Takes

What inspired Sarah Walker to transition from writing non-fiction essays about the body to crafting an apocalyptic novel?

While Walker's debut book explored anxiety and the body's vulnerability in contemporary society, The Water Takes channels these same preoccupations into speculative fiction. Her established interest in how apprehension of disaster impacts our sense of the present finds a natural home in this climate-inflected narrative, allowing her to explore themes of bodily fragility and societal collapse through the intimate lens of two isolated characters. This shift demonstrates how Walker's core concerns about control, vulnerability and contemporary anxieties can be examined through different literary forms.

How does Sarah Walker's background as an award-winning photographer and visual artist influence her writing style?

Walker's multidisciplinary practice as a photographer and fine artist whose work has been commissioned internationally suggests a highly developed visual sensibility that likely informs her prose. Her ability to work across different artistic mediums indicates she may bring a particularly strong eye for imagery, composition and the physical details of environments to her fiction writing. This visual acuity would be especially valuable in rendering the novel's transforming landscape and the physical reality of the rising water that drives the narrative.

What makes the relationship between Pam and Charlotte unusual compared to typical intergenerational friendships in literature?

The pairing of a caustic, health-declining woman in her mid-seventies with a ten-year-old girl creates an unconventional dynamic built on mutual necessity rather than sentimentality. Unlike typical mentor-student or surrogate grandparent relationships, this bond forms between two people who might not have chosen each other under normal circumstances, with Charlotte being foisted upon Pam rather than welcomed. Their survival depends on each other in ways that transcend conventional caregiving roles, as neither possesses the complete resources needed to face the catastrophe alone.

How does The Water Takes balance literary fiction with thriller elements?

Walker achieves a hybrid form that maintains the psychological depth and prose sophistication of literary fiction whilst incorporating the urgent pacing and tension typically associated with genre thrillers. The novel's focus on character interiority, particularly Pam's emotional journey from isolation to connection, coexists with the immediate physical threat of the encroaching water and the practical challenges of survival. This combination allows readers to experience both the contemplative exploration of humanity under pressure and the visceral excitement of watching characters navigate genuine peril.
