The Vampyer

John William Polidori's The Vampyre is one of the earliest and most influential works of vampire fiction, introducing the aristocratic vampire that would shape the genre for generations. First published in 1819, the story emerged from the famous gathering at Lake Geneva where Polidori, Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, and others challenged one another to write ghost stories-a moment that also produced Frankenstein.

The tale follows the mysterious and sinister Lord Ruthven, a figure whose charm and aristocratic presence conceal a darker and more dangerous nature. As he travels through European society, Ruthven leaves behind a trail of tragedy and destruction, revealing a new vision of the vampire as a seductive and socially powerful predator rather than a folkloric monster.

The Vampyre helped establish many of the themes that would later define vampire literature, influencing writers such as Bram Stoker and shaping the development of the Gothic tradition.
