Grade 6-9-In 2205, an ice age has hit Canada. When her mother mysteriously disappears, Chandra, 15, crosses the border into the lands of the prosperous Southern Alliance, where she tracks down the powerful businessman who has kidnapped her mother. Though unable to rescue her at the time, the teen learns of a secret plot to "eliminate" 92 percent of the northern population and returns home to save her fellow citizens. Chandra comes of age during her adventures, learning to conquer her own self-doubts. Spirit Walker studies lead her to some inner knowledge, and also give her some serious fighting skills, which she uses effectively on more than one occasion. Her relationship with a wolf cub she rescued has a spiritual impact on her, and a practical one as the animal aids her in key ways during her quest. The ice-age premise is well developed, but coincidences stretch credulity at times. For instance, as a homeless stranger in Florida, she rescues a boy whose father just happens to work for the man Chandra is trying to track down. Later, she overhears the evil plan because she is hiding in just the right tree at the right time. Such contrivances weaken the story, and when she finally becomes a national hero for saving her people, it's not as satisfying as it might have been. Still, there's plenty of interesting material in this novel, and it has an intriguing premise and a generally well-paced plot.
Industry Reviews
..."an excellent adventure story, and first-rate science fiction as well. As science fiction, Eye of the Wolf is serious stuff, not space opera or fantasy with a futuristic window-dressing. It takes as its setting a future based on a "what if" shaped by current scientific speculation, examining the effects of a human-induced ice age on culture and politics at both the local and the global level...the book does what good science fiction should do: it promotes consideration of humanity's potential and current course, of possibilities good and bad to be worked towards or avoided, and it casts a light on aspects of our current society that sometimes slip by us unnoticed...a definite must-have for the school library." - ResourceLinks "Strong character development and a chilling storyline make this an exciting read." - Today's Parent "The ice-age premise is well developed...plenty of interesting material in this novel and it has an intriguing premise and a generally well-paced plot." - School Library Journal .,."an excellent adventure story, and first-rate science fiction as well.
