Swinging back from the forests surrounding Solaike, Ree falls in with another wandering band, some Korenat refugees searching for their own protection on a trade route besieged with the fallout of the recent uprising. The Korenat's plight might not have stricken Ree so deeply, but they are accompanied by their own archon, who seems to know much more about Ree's own origins than she ever dared to hope.

About the Author

Marie Brennan is an anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for material. She is the author of the Books of the Varekai, a novella series from Tor.com beginning with Cold-Forged Flame, and several acclaimed fantasy novels including A Natural History of Dragons; The Onyx Court Series: Midnight Never Come, In Ashes Lie, A Star Shall Fall, and With Fate Conspire; Warrior; and Witch. Her short stories have appeared in more than a dozen print and online publications.
