In the Kingdom of Lys, where magic is worked in the form of jeweled glass, the Knights of the Rose and the Ladies of the Isle guard the world against an ancient enemy. A thousand years ago, the Serpent was imprisoned by the Young God, and the Orders still keep the secret of that prison. But the traitorous King of Lys made alliance with mages of the suppressed Order of the Serpent and went to war with the Order of the Rose in order to free the imprisoned god.
He drove the Knights overseas, and he forced Averil, Duchess to Quitaine, daughter of his sister and his only heir, to come to his court and choose a husband. But Averil is in love with a commoner, a young Knight of the Rose, and their passion cannot be denied.
Now the King of Lys is dead in battle. But the forces of the Serpent are still at large in Lys, and Averil must be crowned before she can begin magically healing her land. She will succeed only with the sourcerous aid of her beloved, Gereint, and the mysterious mage of the Wild Magic, Peredur, who is far more than he seems to be.

"The Serpent and the Rose" is an assured and powerful novel of magic, politics, and two young people coming into their power in dangerous times. Bryan has a clear eye for nuance and a love for high fantasy that shines through the page.--Kate Elliott, author of Spirit Gate "The Serpent and the Rose is an assured and powerful novel of magic, politics, and two young people coming into their power in dangerous times.
