We meet Jack on an obscure planet. He's been framed for the theft of a valuable cargo shipment. He's been hiding from the authorities, and his only companion is Uncle Virge, the virtual presence of his recently deceased uncle, a thief and con man who had been Jack's only family since the death of his parents. With the cops on the lookout for him, he's eager to find whoever framed him so he can clear his name.
When the solitude of his planet is broken by a firefight in the skies above between two groups of strange ships, Jack is understandably wary. But when one ship is downed, he can't resist checking it out for potential plunder. Instead, he discovers a single, most unlikely survivor: Draycos, a K'da, a dragonlike creature whose species has always lived symbiotically with the humanoid Shontine. Draycos's host had been the downed ship's pilot. If Draycos can't find a new host within six hours, he'll disappear, for good. Jack isn't Shontine, but he's the only chance Draycos has got, so he leaps... into Jack's skin, and they're bonded!
Once bonded, Jack doesn't really like having a Dragon under his skin, but somehow he learns to live with Draycos - and the strange creature is kind of handy to have around. Especially when he helps Jack elude a band of attackers, who are bent on finding any survivors from the downed vessel. If Jack is caught by either the attackers or the police, he'll never clear his name.
Uneasy partners-in-flight, Jack and Draycos escape the planet and begin a quest - to uncover the truth behind Jack's frame-up and unmask the identity of the mysterious attackers who destroyed Draycos's fleet.
Jack's future hangs on the success of their search, as does the future of Draycos's people; if they live long enough, the pair may even discover whether their union was merely coincidence, or if theirs is a friendship written in the stars.
