The world of Darkover is one of the most beloved and developed science fiction and fantasy domains of all time. First appearing in the magazine Other Worlds in 1957, back in the golden age of science fiction, Darkover was built upon constantly by Marion Zimmer Bradley until her death in 1999.

She also actively encouraged other authors to write in the Darkover universe and there are numerous anthologies and short story collections that further expand the world in new and exciting ways. Deborah J. Ross was the author who collaborated most closely with Marion Zimmer Bradley, and the pair were working together on several separate manuscripts when Bradley died.

Hastur Lord was one of these manuscripts, set in the Second Age Against the Terrans as Regis Hastur battles to keep Darkover independent from the Terran Empire. The Empire itself is looking to become a Federation and has sent invitations to many worlds, offering the benefits of protection and close friendship with the technologically advanced civilisation. But Regis understands the strategic value of Darkover for the Terrans who will turn it into little more than a military base and mine the planet of its resources. Regis can't let that happen.
