This mystery set in mid-1930s East Texas could be Lansdale's best yet. Harry Crane, the narrator, was only ten years old at the time, innocent of the ways of the world yet eager to learn. That particular summer, he learned about women being murdered, a black man being lynched and his own father, as the town constable unable to solve these crimes, turning to drink. Lansdale can write the hind legs off a donkey, and the way his prose can make a seamless transition from comedy to cold horror in the same paragraph without missing a beat proves he is one of the top practitioners of his craft in the world.
