Equally adept in the genres of fantasy and crime, Stephen Donaldson originally wrote this novel under the name of Reed Stephens. It's the story of Reg Haskell, a philandering individual who finds himself out of his depth with some very sinister characters. Haskell works at a shady bank and needs urgent help in sorting out his problems. Mick 'Brew' Axbrewder and Ginny Fistoulari are running a beleaguered investigation agency, and attempting to deal with their own problems. And while the duo may not like their shady client, they try to do a professional job. But the subterfuge confronting them is massive, and very soon people began to die. The plot is not one of Donaldson's best, but his characterization is as acute and perceptive as ever, and his many fans will enjoy the novel's authenticity in detail, its ironic and amusing observation of the protagonists and the fashion in which a frightening edifice of suspense is created.
