The young Irish prince is cast out of house and home by the evil uncle, and after a storm-tossed journey finds himself in northern Scotland with a mere twenty loyal men following him. Rome is about to complete its invasion of Scotland and claim the whole country - and possibly Ireland after that - and the handsome prince Eremon and the beautiful princess Rhiann are crucial to the ending of Roman expansion. Wanton Queens and evil Druids stalk the mists, political intrigue is everyone's main meal. The action scenes are good, the characters developed, and whilst there are few surprises lovers of all things Celtic will find a lot to satisfy them in The White Mare. The historical detail, both of the wild Celtic tribes and the Roman legionaries, is excellent, and Jules Watson is clearly at home with the material. (Kirkus UK)
