Fourteen-year-old Miri lives on a mountain where her ancestors have quarried stone and lived in poverty for generations. Then just before winter's first snowfall, a delegation from the lowlands climbs the mountain pass: the king's priests have divined that her small village is the home of the future princess. In a year's time, the prince will come himself and chose his bride from among the girls of the village. The king's ministers set up an academy on the mountain, where every girl aged 12-16 from the village must live and learn how to be a princess. Miri soon finds herself confronted with a harsh academy mistress, bitter competition among the girls, and her own conflicting desires to be chosen as the princess and win the heart of her childhood best friend. But when bandits seek out the academy intent on kidnapping the prince's future bride, Miri must rally the girls together and discover a power unique to the mountain-dwellers in order to save herself and her entire village.
