At the heart of Goose Girl lies the original fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, wonderfully expanded into a full-length novel. Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, is befriended by her aunt when as a three-day-old baby she has still not opened her eyes. Her aunt leads her to realize that she has the gift of animal speaking, and possibly the even rarer gift of nature-speaking, the tongue of fire or wind or tree. But then the aunt is sent away and Ani, as everyone knows her, is kept from birds and animals, and made to realize that she has to conform if she is to assume her rightful place as the next ruler of Kildenree. When she reaches the age of 16 Ani is betrothed to the Prince of Bayern in an attempt to cement relations between the two countries and to avoid a war. Ani sets off for Bayern with her maidservant, Selia, and a retinue of guards only to discover that she has been betrayed and that Selia intends to pose as the Princess and marry the Prince. Ani's trials and tribulations as she battles to regain her position are considerable, but there is an exciting and happy ending to this wonderful tale. Shannon Hale's writing has all the resonance and cadences of traditional tales handed down from generation to generation, and the magic in the book is mysterious and utterly convincing. Ani is no cardboard cut-out well-mannered and equally well-behaved princess; she is clumsy and passionate, she makes mistakes, she is frightened by her situation but despite her poor opinion of herself she wins friends through her kindness and honesty. This is a compelling and beautifully crafted tale with plenty of heartstopping adventure and magic. The vivid colour and quality of the writing will keep the pages turning. Ages 9-12 (Kirkus UK)
