On the very day that Cosy starts her new school her mother is taken into hospital and Cosy has to go to live in a foster home. She is determined to hate it, and not to mix with the two girls who are already there. To them she is 'a snobby swot' who talks 'posh'. Cosy feels lonely and out of place. Then she discovers her room is haunted. The ghost is a girl from World War II who is keeping a diary about the 'poor little ghosty person' that she sees in her room. Her description of 'the ghosty person' is that of Cosy but how can Cosy be a ghost? This novel contains many important issues; from the problems of finding a friend at a new school to the relevance of history in our personal lives. Ure skilfully handles common concerns of young people, by emphasizing that people must remain true to themselves, and not just copy others. Even more impressive is the way Ure subtly treats the subject of adult illness and the effect it has on children. Although it does focus on difficult themes this is a 'feel good' novel that reaches inter-generational and cross-class harmony for a happy ending. (Kirkus UK)
