Bobby Pendragon is a seemingly normal teenager. He has a family, a home and even a dog, his beloved Marley. But there is something very special about Bobby. He is going to save the world.
Industry Reviews
After being virtually kidnapped by his Uncle Press, Bobby, a 14-year-old teenager from New York, finds himself in another world, or 'territory' - the feudal society of Denduron. Bobby's mission appears to be to save the planet from the evil Saint Dane who wants to devastate Denduron before moving on to the other territories of which Second Earth, Bobby's home, is one. Helped in his quest by Loor, the girl warrior from the territory of Zadaa, her mother Osa and his Uncle Press, Bobby learns what it is to be a 'traveller' and discovers much about himself in the process. In a neat gender switch Bobby is the brains of the band of friends whilst Loor provides the brawn. The story is fast paced, drawing the reader in, and the clever device of Bobby sending handwritten manuscripts back to his friends Mark and Courtney in New York allows much of the narrative to be written in the first person. This is the first in what promises to be a long-lived series with the closing chapter indicating the next territory to which Bobby, Loor and Press will travel. MacHale vividly depicts the disbelief of a modern boy when confronted with evidence of alternative worlds and civilizations, with portals to travel between the worlds and the discovery that the people he believed to be his family were merely strangers who looked after him until he was old enough to become a traveller. An exciting novel that will be enjoyed by all teenage fantasy fans. Ages 12+ (Kirkus UK)
