She is a master tactician, and even the death of her husband and the treachery of collaborators fails to deter her. A flood has turned massive stretches of her opponents' territory into an immense lake, and she sends the Egyptian fleet to strike a deathblow at Avaris, stronghold of the Hyksos. But can she inspire her demoralised allies? The protagonists are brought to life with impressive authority and power, and every passage is rich in spare, atmospheric prose.
