In the Black Citadel, a huge dragon is flying silently overhead. It is Queen Dragon who, with her friend Lily Quench, is on a secret spying mission for King Lionel and Queen Evangeline of Ashby Water. But the news they are taking back to Ashby is bad: the Count is preparing for a new invasion. Lionel knows that Ashby, in its impoverished state, could never win a war, but he also knows that immediate action is necessary if his kingdom is not to be swallowed up again. While searching the castle library for information on the Black Mountains, Lionel and Lily find an old Quench recipe for replenishing the Quenching Drops she lost in the grommet factory stockpile. Apparently they are made from a rare and mysterious flower, the blue lily, which only grows in Dragon's Neck, an isolated pass in the Black Mountains. They also learn that a mysterious golden child lives there, and is death to anyone who sees him. Lily realises that if they can find the blue lily and make some more quenching drops, they may be useful in the forthcoming struggle with the Count. But will she be able to save Ashby in time?
