John Whitbourn's The Royal Changeling works some particularly ingenious formula twists on the stock matters of historical fantasy. The Earl of Monmouth, Protestant pretender to the throne of his father Charles II, is a half-elven changeling, but his true loyalties lie elsewhere... The temperamental cavalier Oglethorpe has to save the future from nightmare and come to terms with betrayal by his closest friend. There is a sense here of the sadness of things and of damage which cannot be undone or consoled; whatever happens, this attractive fantasy world will be left thinner. (Kirkus UK)
