Cayce Pollard owes her living to her pathological sensitivity to logos. In London to consult for the world's coolest ad agency, she finds herself catapulted, via her addiction to a mysterious body of fragmentary film footage uploaded to the Web by a shadowy auteur, into a global quest for this unknown 'garage Kubrick'. Cayce becomes involved with an eccentric hacker, a vengeful ad executive, a defrocked mathematician, a Tokyo Otaku-coven known as Mystic and, eventually, the elusive footage maker. In his first contemporary novel, one of the most influential writers of the past twenty years turns his attention to London, New York, the former USSR, and the ubiquity of modern branding - with dazzling results.
Industry Reviews
Cayce (pronounced Casey) is working in the weirder world of future advertising trends in Britain and America. She's also a member of an esoteric newsgroup following a film excerpt which is slowly being revealed over the Internet in tantalizing brief clips. The head of her advertising agency sees this both as an extraordinary piece of marketing and a potential source for creative advertising, and she commissions Cayce to find out who is responsible. Soon it becomes apparent that there is a sinister element involved, with connections to the Russian mafia, September 11 and the death of Cayce's father, and the tension escalates as Cayce fights to disentangle the threads of this complex web of conspiracy and treachery. This is an exciting novel full of ideas, particularly about the cutting-edge world of brands and advertising and the ways in which our views of the past change as we move forward in time. Gibson writes with pace and verve, keeping the narrative moving swiftly while astonishing us with his gift for making us see everything anew. His characterization is equally adept, and he gets into the head of his young female protagonist with skill and empathy. Essential reading. (Kirkus UK)
