A novel with footnotes? By a senior civil servant in the Irish Government? Doesn't sound much fun. Except that the civil servant is Flann O'Brien aka Myles na Gopaleen aka Brian O'Nolan, and the footnotee is O'Brien's greatest comic creation, the theologist and eschatologist De Selby. Here is absurdist fiction at its most Irish, told with immense exuberance and clarity. It's a murder mystery dressed as a comic meditation on the nature of eternity disguised as a love affair between a policeman and his bicycle - plus good advice (from De Selby, naturally) on how to travel back in time with the help of two large mirrors.
