Joe Lansdale is a tough farmer from East Texas who refused to fight ini Vietnam on moral grounds and is now one of America's most successful Crime/Sci-fi/Fantasy authors. His most famous characters are Hap Collins (straight/white/draft dodger) and Leonard Pine (gay/black/Vietnam vet), and in this, their third adventure from 1997, the series is gaining momentum. Hap has come home after a stint on an offshore oil rig and finds Leonard bereft after his lover Raul has ended their affair. Then, a local bad guy known to his friends and enemies alike as Horse Dick (for reasons I won't elaborate upon) is murdered and Leonard gets the blame. Hap of course rallies round and, after a lot of sex, violence, superb one-liners, slapstick comedy and outrageous plotting, solves the case. Lansdale is a comic genius who can change style from humorous to horrific and gruesome with ease. Writers like him don't come down the freeway that often, and like a delicate Texas desert flower, he should be nurtured. Definitely one to be added to the bookshelf post haste. (Kirkus UK)
