Captain Pausert, master of the old pirate-chaser "Venture", seems to have a knack for selling job-lot cargoes around the fringes of the Empire. He's so ahead of the game that he has time to rescue three child slaves, only to find out that they are three witches of Karres with awesome psi powers.

This is a slambang space happy fantasy and it's fun although it won't appeal to the Sci-Fi sophisticate. Dauntless young Captain Pausert is just about to settle down to a reasonable life as a commercial trader but then he meets the wackiest witches in the galaxy. There's Maleen, a Jr. Miss witch who is multi-skilled, her tiny little brother Leewit who specializes in teleporting, and her gamin little sister Goth who has an ear/earth shattering variety of whistles. They also possess a new space drive that makes his ship, the Venture, a sought after prize and Captain Pausert finds himself in the middle of a multitude of world wars. But he also discovers that he too has unsuspected talents which he puts to good use in dealing with such factions as the "Worm World," a menace controlled by a monstrous robot brain and a "self- inflated cosmic clown" known as a "Vatch." And then he's hard put to keep up with the kids, particularly Goth who has marked him as her future mate. Mr. Schmitz has imagination and a good comic sense which keeps the action fluid.
