When Davy begins to see the violent, garish images and squiggles of an obviously disturbed construction laborer he comes to call Wolf, the gift is occasion for terror; later some pictures in the mind of his shiftless father - just recently come into a good job at the same construction site - suggest to Davy that Dad, Wolf and others are involved in a wild plan to rob the company's payroll truck. Davy and his sister at last persuade Dad to go to the police, but meanwhile Davy becomes strangely drawn to Wolf, and it is this deep empathy, combined with his fear, that impels him to perform the releasing brave deed when the armed madman arrives to take his revenge on the family. A tense, expertly crafted fantasy/thriller with solid characters, rounded relationships, and an intriguing blend of extrareality, earthly imperfection, and scandal-crossed family history that is peculiarly Welsh.
