When working as a research technologist for Mars Ltd, Helen Sharman heard about Project Juno (an agreement under which a UK cosmonaut would fly on a Soviet/UK space mission), on the radio, whilst waiting in her car at traffic lights. After a selection process involving thousands of applicants, she travelled three million miles in space with Soviet cosmonauts, on a successful mission that had its share of controversy.
