A tribute to the influential editor/writer Terry Carr (the Universe series, etc.), who died in 1987, by some of the writers he discovered or edited: 11 original stories plus a reprint of what is arguably Carr's own best short story, "The Dance of the Changer and the Three." The superior entries here: Kim Stanley Robinson's fine yarn about some lunar miners who revolt against their creel overlords; a non-sf eternal triangle from Kate Wilhelm; a typically weird piece about gypsy magic from P.A. Lafferty; Gene Wolfe's unexpected alien confrontation; Michael Swanwick's latter-day fate of Merlin and Mordred; a sexy/creepy Lankhmar yarn from Fritz Leiber; and Carr's strange/comic tale of ethereal aliens. Not too shabby either are contributions from Robert Silverberg (time-traveller marooned among Cro-Magnons), Ursula K. Le Guin (a Persephone-Hades update), Carter Scholz (a circular yam), Roger Zelazny (a body-swapping Artificial Intelligence), and Gregory Benford (his recent novel Great Sky River collapsed into short story form).
