Tevis (Mockingbird, The Man Who Fell to Earth) separates these speculative sf stories into two batches: Close To Home and Far From Home. The "Close" stories primarily have to do with time: a long-dead man, his entire personality having once been experimentally taped by computer, is resurrected centuries later in a new, factory-made body; two lovers find that time literally stops for them and everyone else when they touch in bed, which leads them into a helpless greed for non-aging; a son's brackish Oedipal pool is stirred when his dead parents pay a call on him one afternoon, able to regress in time to whatever former age they wish. Tevis' allegorical and caustic side comes out in these stories, as it did in Mockingbird. But in the more diverting, shorter "Far" tales, there's also an interest in fantasy and tinkering: a substance is accidentally invented which converts heat into velocity - and a small bouncing ball of the stuff threatens to level the earth; a cube game turns out to tap dimensions suggesting the Einstein-ian. Overall, then, an appealing tray of intelligent tidbits - with the most fun to be found in the playful mathematics and physics. (Kirkus Reviews)
