But after several years of roaming, Tom has grown tired of his vagabond lifestyle, and he concludes that there might be some appeal after all in giving up the freedom of street life for a loving home. A feline fable traces the progression of a cat, from the time when he refuses to be a small boy's furpiece to his aged- and fattened- identity as a fur person- he is a cat who is also a person. After roving and rambling as a Cat About Town, he finds two ideal housekeepers (they are of course old maids), is named Tom Jones and as Terrible Tom has a terrible fight which determines him to became a Gentle Cat rather than a Gentleman Cat. And in the contentment of his later years, he articulates his ten commandments.... A specialty on the species, occasional rhymes contribute to this affectionate whimsy for a presumably always affectionate audience. (Kirkus Reviews)
