A volume of three books which were first published over 40 years ago. They relate the inter-planetary travels of Ransom, the central character of the book who is forced to leave earth and travel first to the world of Malacandra, then Perelandra and finally returns back to earth.

This science-fiction trilogy was written by the celebrated theologian and religious writer who also invented Narnia. The stories are a preposterous mish-mash of medieval religious scholarship, half-baked space travel, wild and sometimes rather unsettling graphic imagination, philology, preachy bias (including some rank old sexism), eccentric Englishness and obvious religious allegory. But they stick in the memory forever and enrich it. I still dream about the Hressni and can spell pfifltrigg without looking it up. Review by Libby Purves, whose books include 'Regatta' (Kirkus UK)
