A bride, arrested in the 1970s is on death row. Coincidentally Frankie Silver was executed in the 1830s for allegedly killing her husband. Sheriff Arrowood is convinced that both women were innocent and investigates both cases anew.

He is also investigating a case with many striking parallels to the older crime: a young couple has been brutally murdered on the Appalachian tourist trail. McCrumb's Ballad series is not yet known to a great number of readers, but this persuasive tale should win her some new converts. The first-person narrative has a needle-sharp clarity, with the slow accretion of detail fascinatingly handled. Very often with parallel past/present narratives, the past is somehow more compulsively intriguing than the present. McCrumb does not quite overcome that problem here, but the sense of place is vividly realized and the final confrontation is assertively handled. (Kirkus UK)
