McCrumb's Ballad series is not yet known to a great number of readers, but this persuasive tale should win her some new converts. The first-person narrative has a needle-sharp clarity, with the slow accretion of detail fascinatingly handled. Very often with parallel past/present narratives, the past is somehow more compulsively intriguing than the present. McCrumb does not quite overcome that problem here, but the sense of place is vividly realized and the final confrontation is assertively handled. (Kirkus UK)
