In Alison Prince's "The Charmer," there are a spooked cat, a girl who's obsessed by memories of her father, lost at sea five years ago, and a handsome stranger who comes to board with her and her mother - with fatal results. And who is who in Jane Gardam's tale ("Bang, Bang - Who's Dead?") of a family buying (or haunting?) an old house?
