In tomorrow's world of super-technology, a corporate colossus fights off the relentless machinations of its countless political and corporate rivals. Imagine a near-future world where one giant corporation has become so influential that no single government dare oppose it -- not even the mighty USA. A company so powerful that it can establish an independent country to serve as its unassailable headquarters. That company is Tycom, and its founder - Thomas Tye - has made it his evangelical mission to save the Earth from ecological ruin. Already the orbital installations that can manipulate this battered planet's climate are near completion -- while the military backing of an erstwhile superpower is guaranteed. But Tom Tye's seeming altruism carries a price that the rest of the developed world is no longer prepared to pay...EMERGENCE is the dramatic and multi-layered story of a hydra-headed fight against Tycom and its despotic master. But will our planet be a better place without him?
Industry Reviews
Ray Hammond is something of a futurologist, spending much of his time on the corporate lecture circuit, expounding his theories of the future to those who are paid to know. This is his first novel. The plotting is good: it is 2015 and a giant corporation headed by a superstar of the business world is making it its public mission to save the world from ecological disaster. But the price for such apparent altruism is only slowly beginning to emerge. There is plenty for conspiracy theorists and technology fans to enjoy here, but the writing soon begins to grate - Hammond hasn't yet picked up the style to move his work from fact and prediction to page-turning thriller. When a fleeting character is introduced as a night-shift, external-interface manager, you begin to realize that a future dominated by evil corporations would be made worse if we were all made to speak techno-manager jargon like this! Hammond knows his subject and obviously has strong opinions on the nature of our future, but he still has a lot to learn about writing fiction. (Kirkus UK)
