Lovejoy is roped into helping Irma's aunt Mrs Crucifix with her fundraising and invited to advise on the monastery's antiques by the Prior. But then the Priory suddenly closes, a painting disappears from Lovejoy's studio, and Lovejoy finds evidence that his friend Gesso has been murdered.

This is unquestionably one of the better entries in the successful Lovejoy series - a disgrace to his profession he may be, but whether explaining how to fake 'old' pewter or bedding a matronly lady with a view to conning her out of an apostle spoon worth a small fortune, rogue antique dealer Lovejoy is irresistible. Here the antiques dealer is invited to help the prior of the ancient and impoverished Albansham Priory. When Lovejoy and Gesso the cat burglar break into the priory late at night (for research purposes, of course), Gesso is caught but Lovejoy escapes with a rare painting. By morning, the canvas has disappeared and when the priory suddenly closes, with Prior George and his flock also vanishing, things get very murky indeed. The plot trajectory follows an unpredictable and pleasing path. (Kirkus UK)
