The second volume in the best of Robert Westall series, Shades of Darkness contains another 11 ghostly tales from the master storyteller. It is well representative of his work, drawing on many of his short story collections and illustrating the depth of his imagination and talent. The collection opens with a moral tale set in an empty house: a teenage truant is trapped in a ghostly encounter and only the right decisions can bring him release. In 'St Austin Friars' a vicar takes a booking for a funeral a month in advance in a very sinister tale. The hauntings continue in the classic 'The Haunting of Chas McGill' when strange noises from a blocked room reveal a ghostly secret. Fans of Westall's cat stories are catered for with two supernatural tales, one appearing for the first time in this collection. The best is kept for last, however, with 'Blackham's Wimpy', in which a Second World War bomber is haunted by the dying cries of a German fighter pilot in a gripping story of courage and terror that provides a fitting climax to this excellent collection. Shades of Darkness will delight Westall's current fans and win him many new ones amongst 12 to 16 year olds. (Kirkus UK)
