What kind of a book is this: thriller or science fiction? Actually, it's both. And, despite the odd moment of uncertainty that comes from this fusion, it's largely successful. DuBois posits the concept that in the early 1970s the Cuban missile crisis resulted in the superpowers devastating each other's cities with nuclear warheads. While the USA struggles to recover (with New York, Washington, Florida and California completely irradiated) the country - now under martial law - is dependent on aid from Europe. Journalist Carl Landry, working in Boston, is dissuaded from using a news item on a murdered ex-General and finds his own life threatened. Disregarding both warnings and considerable risks, he is soon on a terrifying odyssey through the wasteland of Manhattan to uncover a remarkable secret, involving the man responsible for the devastation. A book like this stands or falls on the credibility with which the author creates his post-catastrophe world, and here the author demonstrates considerable skill. Despite a conventionally characterized protagonist, plotting is fresh and constantly surprising. (Kirkus UK)
