Lansdale is a prolific writer of horror, suspense, Westerns and crime fiction, and this is his sixth wildly entertaining tale of Hap and Leonard, two buddies whose helpful instincts and streetwise bravado see them end up in situations which are as dangerous as they are funny. Hap is a chicken-plant guard trying to stay out of trouble. So they decide to take a cruise, but end up on Mexican soil and become embroiled with corrupt policemen, sinister gangsters, kidnap plots and some truly gut-wrenching violence. Hap is terrific - funny, sensitive, sympathetic and aware that his life has not turned out the way he'd planned it - and the characterization of the support cast is masterful: every single character is memorable and vital to the narrative (even the armadillo). Particular favourites are the serene octogenarian machete-wielding fisherman and his clever daughter, who takes drastic measures to try to change her life because she is 'physically sick' of having nothing. Lansdale's writing is jam-packed with vivid images and East Texan swear words, together with realistic, witty dialogue and action sequences which steamroller the reader along with the savage and sassy exploits of Hap and Leonard. This is a fast and furious fusion of thriller and gangster story with a torrent of images that tumble off the pages from start to finish. Highly recommended for any crime fiction or thriller fan with a pulse and a sense of humour. (Kirkus UK)
