Leon doesn't really believe that the ghost of a mad washerwoman haunts the Crooked Oak. But he's quite happy that everyone else does because it means they leave the tree, and him, alone. But then the tree is kidnapped by a crack team with a helicopter and some mysterious blue jelly. He sees the tree disappear into the ground at Wigton Hall, the home of once-famous rock star Gavin 'Goldilocks' Golightly, but this is so bizarre he must surely have dreamt it. But the next day there is just a smooth crater in the ground where the tree used to be. Leon is outraged and sets out on a rescue mission, with little brother Donny, his yellow duck potty and buggy in tow because Mum is working at the bread shop. While they search, an ancient African baobab tree arrives with a small boy and Levi, an elderly fruit bat, still inside. As the tree-kidnapping conspiracy deepens, a bizarre accident with a computer brings the Mad Mangler, and Leon's worst nightmare, to life. As all good ghost mysteries should, this one ends happily with a marriage in Africa and a miracle cure for baldness. This is a great children's story from Susan Gates, author of Attack Of The Tentacled Terror and The Night Of The Haunted Trousers amongst others. It's a fast-paced adventure that is suitably implausible with well-developed and attractive characters. Ages 7-9 (Kirkus UK)
