An old fur viciously defends the home its vanished mistress willed to her nice nephew and his family; the face of the mad long-ago owner of an old car is glimpsed in a rearview mirror while a reenactment of his tragic crime threatens; an adopted boy is terrorized by a creature, in the comer of his elevator, which turns out to be a hallucination caused by the trauma of losing his birth mother; another apartment-dweller observes a lonely old woman who, buoyed by faith in her own potential, has learned to fly. The eerie elements are intrinsic to the stories and intensify their suspense, but Park's greatest achievement is her unique families, each made up of thoroughly individual characters who are all likable despite some resounding quirks and faults.
