The Borrowers have found the perfect place to live - a complete model village, tailored to their size. But Mr Planter has a rival village, with no inhabitants, and he appears in the middle of the night with a cardboard box and a shrimping net to catch them.

Fourth in the series following the beguiling adventures of these tiny creatures who live in a world close to fairy, but dependent on the humans from whom they borrow the very substance for existence. The little family - Pod and Homily and their teen age daughter Arriety, with the rough-hewn Spiller trailing along-has discovered the perfect setting, a model village that old Mr. Pott was building to keep himself occupied after he lost his leg on the railway. This time the story is almost as much about Pott and his chatty friend, Miss Menzies, and the competition launched by Mr. Platter across the river, and how the Borrowers became involved, when the humans found out too much about them. The Platters stole them - and kept them prisoners in an attic from which they finally escaped with a balloon. It was an exciting adventure - and a triumphant return to the model village until they faced the fact that they just couldn't be known to so many humans. Pod convinced them that they must be on their way again - to a place where they could be as secretive as they chose and find their own way of life.
