The Firebrand rewrites the siege of Troy in the same way that Mists of Avalon presents the Arthurian myth from the perspective of the women in the story. The lead character is Kassandra, one of the daughters of the Trojan king Priam. Kassandra is a priestess of Apollo, a seer with a dreadful awareness of the carnage that will follow when her brother Paris brings home the beautiful, abducted, Helen. Kassandra struggles to thwart fate, but is thwarted herself at every turn by her royal family's deafness to and even derision of her prophecies. The gods are very much alive in this legendary story, as are the often overlooked royal women and even peasants. They must all suffer when kings go to war; kings may find glory in noble defeat, but queens and peasants only shame and hardship. (Kirkus UK)
