Set in London, Paris and Munich in the 1940s and 50s, this story is narrated by Caspar who details his investigations into sex, surrealism, hypnagogic imagery, waxworks, mass observation, Nazi art and mesmerism. Above all, he recounts his obsessive quest for a vanishing woman.

His fourth novel is the 'anti-memoir' of surrealist painter Caspar and recounts Caspar's inconclusive affair with, and subsequent search for, the mysterious Caroline. It is set mainly in the high days of surrealism in the 1930s, and Caspar and his cronies mingle with the real surrealists of history, Breton, Eluard, Penrose et al.
