In "Privatization and Equity, " the contributors examine some of the problems that have arisen as a result of the change to private ownership. Increasingly, governments--particularly those in developing countries--are coming to realize that privatization can have both a very severe economic impact and also raise important problems of equity. Yet remedial actions are often inadequate and unsystematic.
This edited collection provides an analysis of issues concerning the impact of privatization on equity. Some of the contributors identify factors which can lead to greater inequality, including changes in market structure, foreign ownership and operating policies. They also highlight the consequences of ignoring considerations of equity. In the short term, it can discredit privatization programs, and in the long term it might see them reversed. These issues are explored across a broad range of countries by contributors who have a wide experience with privatization, including policy makers, professionals and academics from developed and developing countries.
