What if the most difficult child in the room is the one who needs your love the most?

Powerful Parenting is a step-by-step, faith-centered resource for parents and caregivers who want to create a home where children can flourish, even those who struggle with behavior, trust, or their own sense of worth. Drawing on more than twenty-five years as a special education teacher working with emotionally disturbed and at-risk children, Marsha Grahek offers practical, tested guidance alongside the deeper wisdom of walking as Christ walked toward children the world often labels unreachable.

The book shows you how to instill good manners, encourage real dialogue, build a supportive network, and create memorable family experiences while passing down what matters most: love, truthfulness, financial responsibility, personal dignity, respect for others, and fortitude in hardship. It also addresses the hard seasons every family faces: a child's behavioral problems, the impact of separation and divorce, and educational or medical complications, drawn from Marsha's decades in classrooms, treatment centers, and mission fields. You will meet real children, names changed to protect their privacy, transformed not by force or formula but by someone willing to love them without demanding they change first.

Whether you are raising a child of your own, teaching in a classroom, or caring for a child affected by trauma, separation, or special needs, Powerful Parenting offers hope grounded in Christ's own example: that unconditional love, patient presence, and consistent prayer can reach even the most guarded heart. Married with four children and five grandchildren, Marsha brings a lifetime of faith, family, and hard-won wisdom to every page. If you are ready to become the parent, teacher, or caregiver a struggling child needs, Powerful Parenting will show you the way, one powerful, prayerful step at a time.

What Others Think About This Book:

I've known Marsha and her family for four decades. Marsha has a God-given gift of working with children, especially those with "special" needs. This book is filled with real-life stories, with real people, and it's a guide to "real parenting". After reading this book, readers will stop and think about the consequences and effects of how they handle the parenting of their children. Young parents will find "Powerful Parenting" an excellent resource and tool as they navigate child-rearing through the formative years.

Industry Reviews

Most people do not think of how to raise a child until they have one. Many don't know how to parent because they were not "parented" themselves. We have an entire generation orphaned by divorce. You cannot teach what you never learned. Powerful Parenting by Marsha Grahek offers a comprehensive guide to Christian parenting, emphasizing the importance of love, discipline, effective communication, and faith in raising children. The book is a series of "case studies" giving real-world examples of successful parenting even in the most difficult circumstances. Grahek draws from her own experiences as a child of divorce to offer advice on how to overcome the emotional trauma it can bring into the life of a child. A broken home can produce lingering insecurities that often lead to a troubled life. Grahek also draws from the deep well of her faith, holding up Christ as the ultimate example of love, compassion, and restoration. By following Christ's example, parents can nurture their children's physical, emotional, and spiritual growth, helping them become responsible, loving, and resilient individuals. Her book is unique in that it provides practical steps at the end of each chapter that you can follow, much like family counseling sessions, you can use to improve the relationship you have with your child and change the trajectory of their life. The book is insightful, practical, and beneficial for any parent seeking to raise a child into a confident, responsible adult. That said, the book is not just about raising children; within its pages are life lessons for all of us rooted in the eternal truth of Scripture.

***

As a board member of Marsha Grahek's nonprofit, Project Respect, I have been on mission trips with Marsha, ministering to poor children in the Appalachians. Having seen firsthand her magic touch with these children, I was eager to learn more about her 'secret sauce'- now crystallized into words. Her book did not disappoint. It was a compelling and easy read. Marsha is a gifted storyteller, and she provides many examples of transforming troubled children. Marsha is a special education teacher and is assigned the most difficult children that no one else wants to deal with. If her approach can work for these children, it can surely work with all children. The book is both instructive and based on biblical principles, with Scriptures provided to support her approach. I wish I had had this book when raising my son.
