For the majority of human history, throughout all the world's inhabited continents, families with more than one wife and families with one wife only were morally equal in the eyes of any given society. It is only since the rise of the Greco-Roman empire and subsequent Catholic Church that humans have even sought to differentiate between the two, let alone criminalize one or the other.
