Philosophical Posthumanism

The term 'posthuman' redefines the notion of 'the human', which emerged from a Western, white, male, heterosexual, elitist tradition; in the face of scientific and technological developments, and the cultural, biological and environmental imperatives of our age, this redefinition is particularly urgent.

Used as a generic and all-inclusive label, 'posthuman' has created confusion. This book highlights the similarities and differences between the various terms, theories and methods of these schools of thought, and focuses specifically on philosophical posthumanism, uncovering it's historical, genealogical and onto-epistemological groundings. Examining the topics that fall under the 'posthuman' umbrella, this book looks at: the postmodern roots of the movement; philosophical, cultural and critical posthumanism; transhumanisms; new materialisms and posthumanist feminisms; the heterogeneous landscape of antihumanism; posthumanities and metahumanities.

Philosophical Posthumanism is a philosophy of mediation, which discards confrontation, dualism and hierarchy; instead it uses a process more in tune with evolutionary biology and quantum physics. Such a movement is of key importance in the reflection about the future of the Earth and the human species.
